Join in the conversation! I#8217;m still studying so I don#8217;t know if it has made me more employable.

My field of papers, study (English teacher) entails a stay abroad and several internships. I got to make my AP time count as one internship + my stay abroad, which has shortened my study time (most students struggle with getting their stay aborad into their regular 3 years). Having been an AP may have influenced my getting a job in a big tutoring company. College-wise having been abroad longer than the others (and before my bachelors, not late and during) has been a blessing and a curse. My good grades in footnote English mostly get attributed to with an older person essay, having been in an English speaking country even though I wouldn#8217;t necessarily say that my writing and comprehension skills have changed that much as I have always been invested in learning English and had huge exposure to English/American literature, TV and movies before I left for footnote the US.

It#8217;s a bit frustrating when you work a lot for something and people go #8220;Well, you have lived abroad, of course you get an A#8221;. I feel like my accent has improved a bit but also always get paranoid when I haven#8217;t been able to speak in a while. I can see how the language skills may be very influencial for an older person others though. Chicago Thesis Footnote. Several of my friends have improved A LOT during the time in the US. The biggest effect that I can see is essay, personal growth though. Style. I#8217;d say I#8217;ve always known who I was and analisys essay, haven#8217;t necessarily changed, but I feel like I have evolved a lot. Of course the time aborad also created an age difference to the newly starting studens but I also feel like having lived in thesis footnote such a culturally diverse setting has influenced my beliefs, my motivation and my overall outlook. I think when you do the jackson term, whole AP-thing right you get such a unique look on not just other cultures but also your own. Thesis. You get to reflect your POV and maybe see that just because you grew up with certain ideals, beliefs and traditions that doesn#8217;t necessarily mean they#8217;re better or true.

You get to interview with person essay, learn how to be critical and judgemental and embrace cultural differences. The latter has been incredibly important in my culture since Germany still has a big #8220;us and chicago, them#8221; mentality about foreigners. Especially the government grants research paper, very Anti-American-view that has spread in Western Europe after the NSA thing, but also regarding gun control and social issues is chicago thesis footnote, really interesting. I have studied American history and legal primer, culture too and found it really interesting how having experienced this different lifestyle has changed my willingness to jump on the bandwagon with those opinions. I now have a mindset that allows me to thesis, see things differently but also understand where people are coming from instead of holding my cultural beliefs above theirs. (And that goes for other cultures as well). Night Essay. I got to style thesis footnote, appreciate your school system and really feel like -even though I am a pretty lazy person- I am taking advantage of the basically free, really good college education because I have seen what people do to get that in government grants paper the US. I have gained perspectives on parenting that will come in very handy as a teacher. Chicago Thesis. A childless teacher always is in a bit of a rough position with parents but I feel like I can say I have some perspectives after living with a family very different from my own. Also, I have absolutely gained perspective on the moral, societal dilemma that is parenting + working.

APs and nannies are a bit frowned upon in Germany and night father, a mother is expected to chicago thesis, be there for pottery the children (but also do something self-fulfilling#8230;go figure). Again, I feel like I have always been pretty set in who I am and never had any strange phases per se, but I definitely think the personal growth and footnote, cultural openess is something I benefit from with an older person essay every day. The travelling I did what amazing and so life-changing but it#8217;s not the most important part of the experience. I hope this was what you had in chicago style footnote mind, even though it#8217;s a bit different from the Asian experience that was talked about in the other thread. #8220;How did your Au Pair year help you find a job when you got back to your home country?#8221; I have to admit that I think it mostly didn#8217;t. After finishing my year in the US I started out studying a MINT subject but dropped it, mostly for health reasons, after three semesters.

My year in the US did help me to ace the analisys essay, placement test for my new major (English) but I never considered going into teaching. While everybody thought my course specialization would be American literature (especially as that was what my high school teacher had focused on as well) I ended up heading into the opposite direction (medieval / early modern English literature). For student jobs nobody ever cared that I had been an thesis, au pair except for my old au pair agency who eventually hired me to conduct interviews in my area ;) After graduating I went into administration because my thesis supervisor and interview an older essay, former boss knew somebody who needed help. As that was a fixed-term position I then ended up in retail through a friend. Chicago Style Thesis. Both jobs I got because I knew somebody not because of what I had done before. It could possibly be that I got my current job (university administration) partly because I had been in the US they needed someone with a strong grasp of English and I was the strongest candidate they interviewed.

I had no idea about the job but spoke the language well (I already came to archaeology pottery, the US with a very good knowledge of English though plus of course I did study English at university for another six years#8230; so that might also have been the thesis, case had I not been an jackson papers, au pair in the US). Style Thesis Footnote. I do have the analisys essay, advantage that I can easily switch between German and style thesis footnote, English, I have gained a certain set of cultural competences (partly because of the diverse bunch of friends I had in the US), I am amazingly patient with people, I am more #8220;me#8221; than I was before my time in the US#8230; however, I don#8217;t really know if any of that really helped me find a job. It might have made it easier to keep a job and my life definitely would have been totally different had I not been an dissertation, au pair but I don#8217;t think it really ever played a major role in finding one. #8220;How did what you learned and experienced as an Au Pair influence your outlook about what was possible for you?#8221; I need to style thesis footnote, steal from German Au-Pair for that because I think she is analisys essay, right ;) #8220;APs and nannies are a bit frowned upon in chicago Germany and a mother is expected to andrew jackson, be there for the children (but also do something self-fulfilling…go figure).#8221; while we still don#8217;t have children I have learned that non-parental supervision even for young children is not the chicago thesis, devil. It#8217;s amazing how many (young) mothers over here just quit their jobs when they have their first child.

I know that it is analisys essay, great that this is chicago footnote, possible for those who really want to be SAHMs but I also feel that this is made out to culturally and socially be the only acceptable way. As I was raised by a single, working mom I knew there was a different way from jackson papers a young age but by living in the US I gained first hand experience in how normal that was in other countries I was always the style, odd one out at school and in the US having a mother who was working suddenly was the norm instead of the exception. If we are ever blessed with children I know that I want to go back to my job #8220;as soon as possible.#8221; I am also aware that asap will likely only be after a year but I want to essay writing primer, go back to a full-time or nearly full-time position and I know I will need it for my sanity. I also know that I do not need to feel badly because someone will provide wonderful care to my child(ren). As an style thesis footnote, only child, raised by a single mom I also learned a lot about analisys essay family dynamics, living in a patchwork family with four children (toddler to chicago footnote, teenager) and archaeology dissertation pottery blog, a fifth on the way. It shaped my behaviour in relationships a lot and also my family style. Style Thesis. How my host family lived, how they spent their time together, how it was possible to find a common way for research a family of three adults and four children (and a dog, and frequent visitors) all that shaped my personal life so much. And if we ever have children I want them to grow up as loved, as appreciated and as well cared for as my host kids did. I also learned how to cook. Which my husband appreciates tremendously ^^ Without grandpa#8217;s cooking classes (I still carry the scars proudly the chicago thesis, day I learned not to stick my hand into hot oil) we#8217;d still be living off frozen pizza.

My husband also enjoys the traditional family foods (Chicken and S#8217;ghetti, Beans and government grants for alternative energy research, Cornbread, guacamole, salsa, chocolate chip cookies) he gets when I get melancholic and long for the feeling of chicago, #8220;home#8221; that I had in my host family. With An Older Essay. I have learned to appreciate what we have much more. Things you take for granted when you grow up easy access to public transportation, good quality education, free university education, a public health care system, strict gun laws, long notice periods. Things you tend to chicago thesis footnote, complain about grants energy because you don#8217;t know how good you have it. But I also learned to chicago style thesis, appreciate what other cultures have to offer I am more service oriented, more open, more warm-hearted because of the service culture that I experienced in the US. Outwardly, I am much more outgoing than I was before (inwartly, I am still an night father, introvert but I learned to adapt to the public much better), I make small talk, I smile more, I embrace life more. I think to chicago style thesis footnote, me, personally, it was more of a year of personal growth than anything directly influencing my professional career. I don#8217;t think being an au pair has improved my job prospects, except insomuch as it looks slightly better on a CV than the same period of unemployment.

On the essay, other hand, as German Au-Pair has said, it has done a great deal for my self-knowledge. Now, for chicago example, I know that I would like to work with children, in an advocacy role. And now I have some experience with children which would be a minimum for that kind of role. But my country (along with many) is in a terrible place for employment at the moment, and I do have to say that things still look bleak for when I finish my extension year. I don#8217;t think having been an au pair will give me much of a leg up. But I#8217;m still glad I did it. Other than previous posters, it impacted my career tremedously. It build a lot of soft skills that I still benefit from today those skills are the reason I was able to become a senior manager. Having been abroad tremendouly increased my hiring prospectives and job opportunities. Even back then, a lot of job postings and good trainee programs for grants research paper young graduates required abroad experience (not US specific, any country) and skills to work with different cultures.

My au pair experience was a huge plus to chicago style thesis, get through the first round of checking applications by HR and opened doors for interviews. It led to great international jobs and further aborad assignments (China, Finland, US, Canada). Interesstingly, while for jobs today my au pair experience is essay father, probably the least important item on the CV, I still get asked about it in almost every interview probably often out of curiosity of the interviewer. It is style, safe to say, almost 20 years after my au pair year in the US I am way further up the carreer path than I could have ever been without having had the au pair experience. Most importantly, English language skills is only a reallly supertiny fraction contributing to essay son relationships, that. Chicago Style Footnote. So, when talking to andrew jackson, young women and men interessted in becoming an chicago, au pair, I always stress that it doesn`t matter where you decide to au pair, you do not need to chose an English speaking country. The experience will grow you as a person and interview with person essay, broaden your horizon that is the most important benefit that will change your life.

Although fun fact: I got one job which did not really match my field of study and experience purely for the reason of having lived and enjoyed living in the USA. The employees in chicago style thesis the department frequently ended up with their American counterparts yelling at each other and not getting problems solved. Legal Exam Writing Primer. So, they were looking for someone #8220;who can talk to style thesis, Americans#8221;. I thrived on the collaboration and still get mails from the former colleagues and grants for alternative energy paper, the American counterparts today :-) Just some random examples of the skills I have build as an au pair and specifically from thesis footnote living in a family environment where your exposure to grants energy research paper, a new culture is style, much deeper than just working abroad: * step out of my cultural shoes: not everything my parents and my native culture taught me as right and wrong is also right and wrong in essay exam primer other parts of the style thesis, world. Living in government for alternative a family with different values was a (at first almost shocking) eye opener for me. Chicago Style. Today I still benefit because it taught me accepting and analisys essay, even appreciating other peoples views, values and opinions. I have #8220;lived#8221; it, that something can be #8220;right#8221; in one enviroinment and the opposite is #8220;right#8221; in another. * change hurts but you survive the process and come out style thesis, stronger: moving, new jobs, breakups, new countries#8230; all those changes in life come with the famous 5 stages of night, grief, it is chicago style, not unique to the cultural shock/ adaption process for an au pair. Night Essay Father Son Relationships. I learned a great deal from the experience of moving to a new country and adapt. * proactively dealing with challenges and chicago, find a solution: so what if you are in charge of 3 children and xyz happens you need to legal essay exam, deal with it. Chicago Style. And take responsibility and person essay, make decisions.

Note: there were no mobiles at style footnote the time. So, I had no way of contacting my host parents directly for government for alternative simple questions. I would have had to chicago thesis footnote, call the archaeology dissertation pottery, reception of the company first. That is chicago footnote, my daily life at work and my team sometimes just behaves like a group of kindergarden aged children (in rose colored memories it some days feels even worse). And yes, I have told them more than once that my best management skills come from being an au pair. * ability to fit in: new jobs, new teams, new groups my host family was very different from my native family. Anyway, I loved them from the start. Fitting in a different environment and make myself at home in a new team is interview with an older, still something I benefit from thesis today. * ability to change and legal primer, do things differently: I did not do everything right as an au pair. I have made many mistakes and I am sure I needed lots of advice and training during the first 6 weeks.

At first I felt bad and it was difficult but I soon learned to footnote, appreciate the opportunity to learn doing things in a different way. Night Essay Son Relationships. Every time I start in a new job/ team/ countryI need to change some of my ways to be successful in that setting. With this point, my last promotion can be directly related to my au pair year. So, for my career, being an au pair was the game changer. I think that the mileage different people get from their time as an Au Pair varies a great deal depending on the career field they choose to follow. It is clearly a little easier to style, directly relate your experiences to dissertation blog, a job working in education, child development, child health care etc, than it is working in other fields. However, it is always possible to thesis, take the different soft skills learned and apply them to professional life. Analisys Essay. It is also going to vary between au pairs depending on footnote, where they were in life before the started the grants paper, program. I had already graduated from University, worked with disabled children for several years, and chicago style thesis, lived in interview with person essay a couple of chicago thesis footnote, countries. Jackson Term. As a result, I think the learning curve was a little shallower for me than for other au pairs I knew.

The thing that I have found it has helped, is as an interesting talking point during interviews. I am that rather rare breed; the male au pair. The result of that is I have frequently been asked about being an au pair at interviews. If nothing else, this makes you a little more memorable in style thesis the minds of interviewers, which is frequently half the battle in getting a job. Now that I am a bit further into pottery my career, I see it mattering less, and I will probably remove it from my CV in chicago style footnote a few more years. The one other big thing I have noticed is that it has put me significantly ahead of my peers in terms of analisys essay, maturity, ability to take on responsibility etc.

Often child care is looked down upon, especially when you decide to do it as a man. However the chicago, level of calm, maturity, ability to problem solve, and generally avoid the analisys essay, desire to kill a five year old when they are having a challenging day and driving you up the wall, cannot be underestimated. I find the last one especially helpful when dealing with one or two of my more challenging colleagues. Style Thesis. Overall, I would definitely say that the good things I gained from being an au pair significantly outweigh any negatives, including delaying starting my career for a year. Oh, and analisys essay, it meant I could finally make it to the same country as my then long term and very long distance girlfriend (now wife), which was a definite plus. Have a great day. Just out of curiosity: you had an American girlfriend, went to the US and took her home with you? Being a male AP, I think, also takes some cojones! I would think you#8217;re not gonna do that if you#8217;re super insecure about who you are. Whereas being a female au pair is now pretty much mainstream.

The thing I found in talking to other male au pairs is that most of us thought about style thesis whether we really wanted to archaeology, do it for a year, to a greater extent than many of the chicago footnote, women. Not that all take it lightly, but there is often an attitude of #8220;well I am a girl so I can look after kids#8221;. I know that is a very broad generalization, but I have found it to hold true, especially with the au pairs who get a big shock with how tough 40 plus hours a week of child care can be. I actually had an with person, American girlfriend before I was an au pair. We got.

Married and I stayed here. I am a permanent resident. “How did your Au Pair year help you find a job when you got back to chicago footnote, your home country?” “How did what you learned and experienced as an essay, Au Pair influence your outlook about style footnote what was possible for you?” So, for my part, I was an primer, AuPair and a Repeat AuPair. I would say my life have changed a lot since my experiences in a good or bad way. In a bad way to my home country, but in a good/great way in others countries. Let me explain, my studies was on science/math/physics and being an style footnote, Aupair right after this bachelor#8217;s wasn#8217;t such a good idea but I did it though. When I came back after one year, I studied one extra year for a double bachelor#8217;s Degree and andrew jackson term papers, this one year was a real challenge I felt like I didn#8217;t fit in so I started travelling a lot all around and style thesis, tried a job in France but I went back to US for a second time to be a repeat aupair. After my second time, it was the worst, companies didn#8217;t want me because of my time there and #8220;seriously who needs English to do math and for alternative research, physics#8221; ( that#8217;s what I heard many time) So I started small jobs until finding one, the right one#8230; post mail, aupair in chicago style footnote Ireland, Aupair Australia, Waitress in Asia#8230;. I wanted my experience to be valuable and not a waste so I searched and I found.

From my aupair experiences I gained a lot of patience, flexibility, understanding kids and their developments through different age. Exam Writing Primer. I loved teaching them french or math or any others things so I decided to be a teacher none the less an english teacher abroad. As my two years in US ( and chicago thesis, other years everywhere around the world) makes me an easy person to adapt in father a country and to adapt to their ideas, I challenged it. I passed my TEFL ( teaching english as a foreign language), teaching diploma, and, now, it#8217;s been more than one year living in Hong Kong, being a kindergarten teacher. Footnote. I think it#8217;s up to energy paper, you to make your experience valuable and worth it back home. Chicago Thesis Footnote. In my mind, girls who go there are the most approachable and easy in life and most of us have a job back home related to our experience in US. It changed my life a lot, I was going to scientific path and be locked up in analisys essay labs but now I travel around, have jobs all over the world because of those experience, I#8217;m more open to understand countries, people and thesis footnote, their culture. Grants Energy Research. I have a home and style, a job that I love, I speak English and government paper, french every day so I think I would do it all over again this experience if I were going back in time ;) First, it#8217;s a great conversation starter in style thesis interviews and makes me memorable. And then, everyone who#8217;s interviewed me has remarked that if I can handle full responsibility of kiddos for 40+ hours a week I can do anything. Ha. My au pairing was DIRECTLY responsible for my landing my current job.

One of my HKs was autistic and another was most definitely spectrum-y. Jackson Term. Additionally, I dealt with lots of#8230;fun#8230;behaviors and situations that made things#8230;interesting. So now I work in an autism center testing kids for autism and other neurodevelomental disorders (as well as behavioral/social/emotional things, learning disabilities, cognitive delays, etc) every day. Style. The girl who originally got the job quit after the analisys essay, first week. So I waltzed in, underqualified in terms of education, but having experienced three and five year olds punching me in the face, peeing on footnote, me when put in andrew jackson term papers time out, dealing with perseverative behaviors and intense need for routines, epic meltdowns, etc. That#8217;s what landed me the job. And, it was incredibly beneficial for dealing with behavior management, remaining calm and patient when you have boots thrown at chicago style thesis footnote your face, or anything along those lines, working with parents, and on interview with an older essay, and on. Thesis. Au pairing changed my life and jumpstarted my career, completely unexpectedly. #8216;How did your Au Pair year help you find a job when you got back to your home country?#8217; It didn#8217;t, I currently work in construction and property development so that bit of childcare experience is irrelevant as to what I#8217;m doing for night essay a living. Chicago Style Footnote. I did the AP thing solely as a career break and had no intention to put it in my resume. How did what you learned and experienced as an Au Pair influence your outlook about what was possible for government grants paper you?

It changed my views on chicago footnote, live-in house staff. Even though live in nanny would make our lives so much easier, but being an for alternative paper, AP made it clear for me, that at chicago style footnote the end of the day I don#8217;t want any sitter to hang out in jackson term papers my kitchen when I come from work and just want to chicago thesis, relax. Also after my own au pair adventure I realized that even if my child was a bit older and I wanted the multicultural experience for her NO au pair would ever want to match with my family. An Older Person. I#8217;m not sure if it was your intention or not, but your last paragraph makes it sound like you think the AP program is a bad idea. Why wouldn#8217;t they want to match with you? Not at all, it is a good idea, unless someone does not understand the intention of the whole program at all. There are several reasons why I think au pairs wouldn#8217;t want to match with my family. We are in footnote Europe so to start with we couldn#8217;t use more than about 30 (maybe 35?) hrs/week.

To make use of the night essay father son relationships, program we could probably do with that but it would have been an unsociable split shift. We both work long hours, I work in a major city about 1.5 by style thesis footnote, train one way, I leave really early 3 days a week, so unless my partner wasn#8217;t in the house that day I would have to night essay father, have the AP ready to chicago style thesis footnote, go before 5am. I work Monday to analisys essay, Friday, but my partner works weird patterns, which sometimes change, so there would be no regular shift plan for the au pair. Very rarely his shift changes unexpectedly (within hours notice), and on those days we#8217;re all in trouble :) Weirdly enough it didn#8217;t happen since well over 8 weeks now, but you never know. Style. We live in a rural area with no public transport. Legal. In theory there is a bus with a bus stop, but I guess it#8217;s more like a hail-stop and I have never seen anyone using it. The nearest pub is few miles away, the thesis footnote, only shop in the nearest village is a grocery shop so no shoes and clothes hunting over the weekend unless they wanted to go to the nearby town, or the large city further away.

We do have a car that we don#8217;t really use (my car, as I take the archaeology dissertation pottery, trains 90% of the time) but I wouldn#8217;t let the AP drive to the big city on their own#8230;at least for the first few weeks. It would be fine if they wanted to chicago style footnote, drive around the area( for example to the pub) BUT there are no local APs I know about, so unless my AP was a self proclaimed hermit they would be really bored and lonely. Also, there is analisys essay, no requirement for au pairs in chicago style footnote Europe to take classes, however if they wanted to, living with us would make it logistically difficult most days. The only bonus would be weekends off, but then again with no one to grants energy paper, hang out with that#8217;s a really sad perspective for most people :-). Having said that, it#8217;s all hypothetical. My child is small and I doubt she could communicate about any issues, so leaving her with a stranger is chicago, not an jackson papers, option. Our first aupair came to us from China and stayed with us for two years. Chicago Style Thesis. Prior to archaeology blog, coming to us, she worked in a cell phone store.

When she first arrived her English skills (both speaking and understanding) were way less than what we expected (only had one short phone interview). Chicago Style Footnote. Wow, did she hustle. She said her goal was to become sort of English translator when she returned to China. She attended ESL classes 5 days per week, sometimes twice a day. She was active in her church and several other hobby clubs around town. Government Grants For Alternative Energy Research. She was a different person when she left. Chicago. Since returning to China, she tells me she does have a job translating business papers from Chinese to English and English to energy research, Chinese. I know she recieved at style least one promotion.

She sent me pictures of essay exam, her new apartment and Vespa she purchased and style thesis footnote, sounds happy. We are so proud of her and happy for her. I love these stories. My first AP was from andrew term papers France and chicago thesis footnote, she also really worked hard to improve her English, and she left with near native fluency. It has been over 2 years since she left and legal essay primer, she#8217;s still trying to chicago style, get on a career track, but she has found a lot of interesting rewarding work for short stints.

I think the analisys essay, English language has helped her, she#8217;s even worked in the UK here and there, but I know that she is disappointed with the way things have turned out in general. I think that is style, mostly the fault of the economy and the kind of job she wants to get (in childcare) is a lot more competitive then it would be if the economy was better. I really think she deserves to have her dreams come true- she#8217;s a hard working, nice, intelligent girl. It might just be a matter of time. I know she doesn#8217;t give up. My non European APs have really financially gained from the program (significant change in career trajectory) not so much my gap year European APs. It seems like the APs commenting here tend to all be European. As a European AP i have to say that the AP-Jobs helped me a lot at my construcion side job. Not actually childcare-stuff, but everything related to analisys essay, it: My organisational skills are way better, I feel that I can handle stressful situations better and stay calm in situations where I got angry before. As a team-leader I take more time for thesis my employees, ask them how they are, if everything works out great or if they feel that something should change.

I also think that I#8217;m more helpful and more social since I was an Au Pair. But I actually don#8217;t mention that I was an government paper, AP in my CV, instead I wrote #8220;language studies#8221; for thesis that time. Writing. Living with another family to improve language skills is very traditional in Switzerland. At the thesis, age of 16 some women/girls go to legal essay exam, the french-speaking part of style thesis footnote, switzerland to do a so called #8220;Haushaltsjahr#8221; where they live with an other family, studie french and help the family with cooking, cleaning and childcare if needed (very few hours, no pay but bed, food and language school). But I feel like at the construction-jobs they don#8217;t consider beeing an AP as a great thing (they see young woman playing with children and only haveing fun all day, and don#8217;t think that it is hard work, although I had to work more hours as an AP than in son relationships my #8220;normal#8221; job), but they love people who did language studies. Chicago Style Footnote. Comments on blog, this entry are closed. Please email your question to mom at aupairmom dot com. Check the tab at the top -- Need some advice? -- for particulars. Chicago Style: Thesis Statement, …

6 Ways to Prevent Cheating on Homework. One of the most frustrating aspects of teaching in today#8217;s world is the chicago, cheating epidemic. There#8217;s nothing more irritating than getting halfway through grading a large stack of papers only to realize some students cheated on the assignment. There#8217;s really not much point in andrew term teachers grading work that has a high likelihood of having been copied or otherwise unethically completed. So. What is a teacher to do? We need to be able to assess students.

How can we prevent cheating on homework? Like most new teachers, I learned the hard way over the course of many years of teaching that it is possible to reduce cheating on homework, if not completely prevent it. Here are six suggestions to keep your students honest and to style keep yourself sane. One of the reasons students cheat on homework is because they are overwhelmed. I remember vividly what it felt like to be a high school student in honors classes with multiple extracurricular activities on my plate. Other teens have after school jobs to help support their families, and some don#8217;t have a home environment that is conducive to studying. While cheating is never excusable under any circumstances, it does help to walk a mile in our students#8217; shoes. If they are consistently making the decision to analisys essay cheat, it might be time to reduce the style footnote, amount of homework we are assigning. I used to give homework every night especially to my advanced students. I wanted to push them.

Instead, I stressed them out. They wanted so badly to be in the Top 10 at graduation that they would do whatever they needed to dissertation do in order to complete their assignments on time even if that meant cheating. When assigning homework, consider the grade level, maturity, and outside-of-school commitments involved. Think about the chicago style thesis footnote, kind of school and home balance you would want for your own children. Go with that. Allowing students time in class to with an older essay get started on style thesis their assignments seems to prevent cheating to some extent.

When students have class time, they are able to knock out part of the assignment, which leaves less to energy research paper fret over later. Additionally, it gives them an opportunity to ask questions. When students are confused while completing assignments at home, they often seek #8220;help#8221; from a friend instead of going in early the next morning to thesis footnote request guidance from the teacher. Often, completing a portion of a homework assignment in class gives students the confidence that they can do it successfully on their own. Plus, it provides the social aspect of learning that many students crave. Instead of fighting cheating outside of andrew term, class , we can allow students to work in pairs or small groups in class to learn from each other. If students are cheating on thesis homework, they probably lack the vision for how the work is beneficial. In order to curb cheating, it#8217;s important to consider the meaningfulness and valuable of the assignment from students#8217; perspectives. Dissertation Blog? They need to see how it is relevant to style them. In my class, I#8217;ve learned to assign work that cannot be copied.

I#8217;ve never had luck assigning worksheets as homework because even though worksheets have value, it#8217;s generally not obvious to for alternative energy paper teenagers. It#8217;s nearly impossible to thesis footnote catch cheating on worksheets that have #8220;right or wrong#8221; answers. That#8217;s not to say I don#8217;t use worksheets. Essay? I do! But.

I use them as in-class station, competition, and practice activities, not homework. So what are examples of more effective and meaningful types of homework to assign? Ask students to complete a reading assignment and respond in chicago thesis writing. Have students watch a video clip and answer an oral entrance question. Require that students contribute to an online discussion post. Assign them a reflection on the day#8217;s lesson in the form of a short project, like a one-pager or a mind map. As you can see, these options require unique, valuable responses, thereby reducing the opportunity for students to cheat on them. Essay? If you#8217;re sincerely concerned about students cheating on footnote assignments, consider reducing the point value.

Reflect on your grading system. Are homework grades carrying so much weight that students feel the need to cheat in order to maintain an A? Each teacher has to do what works for him or her. In my classroom, homework is andrew jackson term papers, worth the style footnote, least amount out of any category. If I assign something for which I plan on giving completion credit, the point value is even less than it typically would be. Projects, essays, and exam formal assessments count for much more. To some extent, this part is out of educators#8217; hands. Much of the ethical and style footnote moral training a student receives comes from home. Still, we can do our best to create a classroom culture in which we continually talk about integrity, responsibility, honor, and the benefits of legal primer, working hard.

What are some specific ways can we do this? Talk to students about cheating. Explain to them that there are different kinds. Many students are unaware, for instance, that the #8220;divide and conquer (you do the first half, I#8217;ll do the second half, and then we will trade answers)#8221; is footnote, cheating. As a class, develop expectations and consequences for students who decide to take short cuts.

Decorate your room with motivational quotes that relate to honesty and doing the right thing. Discuss how making a bad decision doesn#8217;t make you a bad person. It is an opportunity to grow. Share with students that you care about them and their futures. The assignments you give them are intended to andrew prepare them for success. Offer them many different ways to seek help from you if and when they are confused. Provide revision opportunities for homework assignments.

Explain that you partner with their parents and chicago thesis footnote that guardians will be notified if cheating occurs. Explore hypothetical situations. What if you have a late night? Let#8217;s pretend you don#8217;t get home until after orchestra and Lego practices. You have three hours of homework to writing do. You know you can call your friend, Bob, who always has his homework done. How do you handle this situation?

EDUCATE ABOUT PLAGIARISM. Many students don#8217;t realize that plagiarism applies to more than just essays. At the style footnote, beginning of the school year, teachers have an andrew term, energized group of students, fresh off of summer break. I#8217;ve always found it#8217;s easiest to chicago style motivate my students at this time. I capitalize on this opportunity by beginning with a plagiarism mini unit. While much of the information we discuss is about writing, I always make sure my students know that homework can be plagiarized. Speeches can be plagiarized. Videos can be plagiarized. Anything can be plagiarized, and the repercussions for stealing someone else#8217;s ideas (even in the form of a simple worksheet) are never worth the time saved by term doing so. In an ideal world, no one would cheat. However, teaching and learning in style the 21st century is much different than it was fifty years ago.

Cheating? It#8217;s increased. Maybe because of the digital age. Maybe because of interview with an older person, differences in morals and values of our culture. Maybe because people are busier. Maybe because students don#8217;t see how the school work they are completing relates to their lives. Chicago Style Thesis Footnote? No matter what the root cause, teachers need to be proactive about preventing cheating on homework whenever possible. Personally, I#8217;d never advocate for completely eliminating homework.

To me, it has the potential and value to teach students many lessons both related to school and life. Still, the #8220;right#8221; answer to this issue will be different for each teacher, depending on her community, students, and culture. Chicago Style Citation Dissertation …

columbia essay 2008 Doing Film History. Nearly everybody loves movies. We aren’t surprised that people rush to see the latest hit or rent a cult favorite from the chicago style thesis footnote video store. But there are some people who seek out old movies.

And among those fans there’s a still smaller group studying them. Let’s call “old movies” anything older than twenty years. This of course creates a moving target. Baby boomers like us don’t really consider The Godfather or M*A*S*H to be old movies, but many twentysomethings today will probably consider Pulp Fiction (1994) to be old maybe because they saw it when they were in their teens. Our twenty-year cutoff is arbitrary, but in many cases that won’t matter. Everybody agrees that La Grande Illusion from 1935 is an old movie, though it still seems fresh and analisys essay vital. Now for the real question. Why would anyone be interested in watching and studying old movies? Ask a film historian, professional or amateur, and you’ll get a variety of answers. Chicago Style Thesis Footnote. For one thing, old films provide the dissertation pottery same sorts of insights that we get from watching contemporary movies.

Some offer intense artistic experiences or penetrating visions of human life in other times and places. Some are documents of chicago style thesis footnote, everyday existence or of extraordinary historical events that continue to reverberate in our times. Still other old movies are resolutely strange. They resist assimilation to our current habits of thought. They force us to acknowledge that films can be radically different from what we are used to. They ask us to adjust our field of view to accommodate what was, astonishingly, taken for granted by people in earlier eras. Another reason to study old movies is that film history encompasses more than just films.

By studying how films were made and received, we discover how creators and audiences responded to their moment in history. By searching for pottery blog, social and cultural influences on films, we understand better the ways in footnote which films bear the traces of the societies that made and consumed them. Film history opens up a range of important issues in an older person essay politics, culture, and the artsboth “high” and “popular.” Yet another answer to our question is this: Studying old movies and the times in which they were made is chicago thesis, intrinsically fun. As a relatively new field of academic research (no more than sixty years old), film history has the excitement of a young discipline. Over the past few decades, many lost films have been recovered, little-known genres explored, and neglected filmmakers reevaluated.

Ambitious retrospectives have revealed entire national cinemas that had been largely ignored. Even television, with some cable stations devoted wholly to the cinema of the past, brings into our living rooms movies that were previously rare and little-known. And much more remains to be discovered. There are more old movies than new ones and, hence, many more chances for fascinating viewing experiences. We think that studying film history is archaeology pottery blog, so interesting and important that during the late 1980s we began to write a book surveying the field. The first edition of Film History: An Introduction appeared in 1994, the footnote second in 2003, and the third will be published in spring of grants energy, 2009. In this book we have tried to chicago thesis footnote, introduce the energy history of cinema as it is chicago thesis footnote, conceived, written, and taught by its most accomplished scholars. But the book isn’t a distillation of all film history. We have had to rule out certain types of cinema that are important, most notably educational, industrial, scientific, and pornographic films.

We limit our scope to theatrical fiction films, documentary films, experimental or avant-garde filmmaking, and animationrealms of dissertation blog, filmmaking that are most frequently studied in chicago style thesis college courses. Researchers are fond of saying that there is no film history, only film histories. For some, this means that there can be no intelligible, coherent “grand narrative” that puts all the facts into place. The history of avant-garde film does not fit neatly into the history of color technology or the development of the Western or the life of archaeology pottery, John Ford. For others, film history means that historians work from various perspectives and with different interests and chicago footnote purposes. We agree with both points. There is no Big Story of Film History that accounts for all events, causes, and consequences. Government Grants. And the variety of historical approaches guarantees that historians will draw diverse conclusions. We also think that research into style thesis film history involves asking a series of questions and searching for government grants for alternative energy paper, evidence in order to answer them in the course of an argument. When historians focus on different questions, turn up different evidence, and formulate different explanations, we derive not a single history but a diverse set of historical arguments.

What Do Film Historians Do? While millions are watching movies at chicago thesis this moment, a few thousand are studying the films of the past. One person is night son relationships, trying to ascertain whether a certain film was made in style thesis 1904 or 1905. Another is tracing the fortunes of papers, a short-lived Scandinavian production company. Another is poring over a 1927 Japanese film, shot by style thesis, shot, to find out how it tells its story. With. Some researchers are comparing prints of an obscure film to style thesis, determine which one can be considered the original. Other scholars are studying a group of essay writing primer, films signed by footnote, the same director or set designer or producer. Interview With Person. Some are scrutinizing patent records and footnote technical diagrams, legal testimony, and production files. And still others are interviewing retired employees to discover how the with an older Bijou Theater in their hometown was run during the 1950s. One reason is evident.

Most film historiansteachers, archivists, journalists, and freelancersare cinephiles, lovers of style thesis, cinema. Like bird-watchers, fans of 1960s television, art historians, and other devotees, they enjoy acquiring knowledge about the object of their affection. Movie fans may stop there, regarding the jackson papers accumulating of facts about their passion as an end in itself. But whatever the pleasure of knowing the style names of all the Three Stooges’ wives, most film historians are not trivia buffs. Film historians mount research programs , systematic inquiries into the past. A historian’s research program is organized around questions that require answers. A research program also consists of assumptions and background knowledge. For a film historian, a fact takes on significance only in the context of a research program. Consider this image, from a film of the government for alternative silent era.

A film archivistthat is, someone who works in a library devoted to collecting and preserving motion picturesoften comes across a film that is unidentified. Perhaps the title credit is missing or the chicago style thesis footnote print carries a title that differs from for alternative energy research paper that of the original film. The archivist’s research program is, broadly, identification. The film presents a series of chicago style, questions: What is the date of production or of release? In what country was it made? What company and personnel made the film? Who are the actors? Our mysterious film carries only the French title Wanda l’espione (“Wanda the Spy”)most likely a title given to it by a distributor. Analisys Essay. It was probably imported rather than made in Belgium, where the chicago thesis print was discovered. Fortunately there are some clues in the print itself. The lead actress, seated in the foreground, is essay exam primer, a famous star, Francesca Bertini.

Identifying her makes it almost certain that the film is Italian. Chicago Style Thesis. But Bertini was a star from father 1907 into the 1930s. How can we narrow the dates further? The film’s style helps. The camera points straight toward the chicago thesis back wall of the analisys essay set, and the actors seldom move closer to the camera than they are seen here. The editing pace is slow, and the action is staged so that performers enter and thesis exit through a rear doorway. All these stylistic features are typical of analisys essay, European filmmaking of the mid-1910s. Such clues can be followed up by chicago style thesis, referring to a filmography (a list of blog, films) of Bertini’s career. A plot description of thesis footnote, a 1915 film in which she starred, Diana l’affascinatrice (“Diana the Seductress”), matches the night essay father action of the unidentified print.

Note that the identification depended on certain assumptions. For example, the researcher assumed that it’s extremely unlikely for a modern filmmaker to create a fake 1915 Italian film, just to baffle archivists. (Film historians need not worry about forgeries, as art historians must.) Note, too, that the chicago footnote researcher needed some background knowledge. She had reason to believe that films staged and cut a certain way are characteristic of the mid-1910s, and she recognized a star from other films of the period. Most historians go beyond identification and tackle broader subject areas. Consider another common situation. An archive holds many films made by the same production company, and it also has numerous filing cabinets bulging with documents concerning that company’s production process. An Older Essay. Its collection also includes scripts in various drafts; memos passed among writers, directors, producers, and other staff; and sketches for sets and costumes. This is style thesis, a rich lode of datatoo rich, in fact, for one researcher to tackle. The historian’s problem is now selecting relevant data and salient facts. What makes a datum relevant or a fact salient is the historian’s research program and its questions. One scholar might be interested in grants tracing common features of the company’s production process; he might ask something like, “In general, how did this firm typically plan, execute, and market its movies?” Another historian’s research program might concentrate on the films of a certain director who worked for the company.

She might ask, “What aspects of visual style distinguish the director’s films?” Some facts would be central to one program but peripheral to another. The historian interested in the company’s business routines might not particularly care about a daring visual innovation introduced by thesis footnote, the director who is the focus of the other historian’s inquiry. In turn, the night father son relationships stylistic historian might be uninterested in how the company’s producers promoted certain stars. Again, assumptions exert pressure on the researcher’s framing of questions and style footnote pursuit of information. The company historian assumes that he can trace general tendencies of legal writing, production organization, largely because film companies tend to chicago footnote, make films by dissertation blog, following fairly set routines. The director-centered researcher assumes that her director’s films do have a distinct style. Chicago Style. And both historians would mobilize background knowledge, about how companies work and how directors direct, to guide their research.

Historians in any discipline do more than accumulate facts. Jackson Term Papers. No facts speak for chicago thesis footnote, themselves. Facts are interesting and important only as part of research programs. Facts also help us ask and jackson answer questions. Film History as Description and Explanation. Inevitably, a historian needs at least a little information, along with background knowledge and assumptions, to prod her to chicago footnote, ask questions. But the historian does not necessarily sift through mountains of legal, facts and then judiciously ask a question. A historian may begin with a question, and sometimes that question might be better described as a hunch or an intuition or even just an itch.

For example, one young historian saw a few of the “anarchic” American comedies of the 1930s and noticed that their vulgar gags and absurd situations were very different from the more sophisticated comedy of the style footnote period. Suspecting that stage comedy might have been a source, he framed a question: “Might vaudeville and its performance style have shaped these particular comedies of the dissertation blog early 1930s?” He began to gather information, examining films, reading coverage of the comedians in style footnote the Hollywood trade press, and father studying shifts in American taste in humor. The process of research led him to refine his question and to mount a detailed account of how comedians introduced a vaudeville aesthetic into sound films but then muted it in accord with Hollywood’s standards of taste. 1. Nonhistorians often visualize the chicago style footnote historical researcher as a cousin to Indiana Jones, braving library stacks and crawling through attics in analisys essay quest of the treasure-lode of documents that overturn popular opinion. Certainly new documentation has a key role to play in historical research. One scholar gained entry to chicago footnote, the long-inaccessible files of Hollywood’s self-censorship agency, the Hays Office, and she was able to put forth a new account of the office’s procedures and functions. 2 Similarly, the archaeology increasing availability of films from cinema’s earliest era has created an entire subfield of cinema history. 3. Still, many research programs rely more on asking new questions than on unearthing new data.

Sometimes the research question seems to have been answered by previous historians, but another researcher comes along and chicago thesis suggests a more complete or complex answer. For example, no historian disputes the fact that Warner Bros. was quick to invest in talking pictures in essay father son relationships the mid-1920s. For a long time most historians believed that Warners took this risky step because it was on the verge of bankruptcy and was desperate to save itself. But another historian with economic training concluded that the evidencewhich had long been publicly available to researcherspointed to a quite different conclusion. Far from facing bankruptcy, Warners was quickly expanding and investing in sound films was part of a carefully planned strategy for breaking into the ranks of the major studios. Style Footnote. 4.

Our examples all indicate that the historian’s research program aims to do at least two things. First, the historian tries to essay exam writing, describe a process or state of affairs. She asks What and who and where and when. What is this film, and who made it, and where and when? In what ways does this director’s work differ from that of others?

What was the vaudeville comedic style? What evidence is there that a studio was nearly bankrupt? Who is the actor in this shot? Who was responsible for thesis, scripts at this company? Where was this film shown, and archaeology pottery blog who might have seen it? Here the historian’s problem is largely one of finding information that will answer such questions. Accurate description is indispensable for style, all historical research. Scholars have spent countless hours identifying films, collating versions, compiling filmographies, establishing timelines, and creating reference works that supply names, dates, and the like. The more sophisticated and long-lived a historical discipline is, the richer and more complete its battery of government for alternative paper, descriptive reference material will be. Second, the historian tries to explain a process or state of affairs.

He asks, How does this work? and Why did this happen? How did this company assign tasks, lay out responsibilities, carry a project to completion? How did this director’s work influence other films from the footnote company? Why did Warners pursue talkies when larger companies were reluctant to do so? Why did some sound comedians adopt the vaudeville comedic style while others did not? The film historian, like a historian of art or politics, proposes an explanatory argument . Having asked how or why, she puts forward an blog, answer, based on an examination of evidence in light of chicago style thesis footnote, assumptions and background knowledge. Interview An Older Person Essay. In reading historical writings, we need to recognize that the essay or book is not just a mass of facts but an argument. The historian’s argument consists of evidence marshalled to thesis footnote, create a plausible explanation for analisys essay, an event or state of affairs. That is, the argument aims to chicago style thesis footnote, answer some historical question. Most arguments about father son relationships, film history rely on evidence. Chicago. Evidence consists of information that gives grounds for believing that the energy paper argument is sound.

Evidence helps us judge whether the historian has presented a plausible answer to the original question. Film historians work with evidence of many sorts. For many historians, copies of the films they study are central pieces of evidence. But this data set is chicago thesis footnote, partial. Although the cinema is a relatively young medium, invented only a little over a century ago, many films have already been lost or destroyed. For decades, movies were seen as products with temporary commercial value, and companies did little to legal essay exam writing, ensure their preservation. Even when film archives began to be founded in the 1930s, they faced the chicago style footnote daunting task of collecting and sheltering the thousands of films that had already been made. Energy Research. Archivists had to choose what they could afford to retain. Moreover, the nitrate film stock, upon which most films up to chicago style thesis, the early 1950s were shot and printed, was highly flammable and deteriorated over time.

Deliberate destruction of films, warehouse fires, and the gradual decomposition of person, nitrate stored in bad conditions have led to the loss of many titles. In the frame below, from Willy Reilly and His Colleen Bawn , an Irish film from chicago thesis footnote 1918, severe nitrate deterioration has obliterated the most important figures. According to night essay father son relationships, rough estimates, only about 20 percent of silent films are known to survive. Many of these are still sitting in vaults, unidentified or unpreserved due to chicago thesis footnote, lack of funds. More recent films may be inaccessible to essay writing primer, the researcher as well. Films made in some small countries, particularly in Third World nations, were not made in many copies and did not circulate widely. Small archives may not have the facilities to preserve films or show them to researchers. In some cases, political regimes may choose to suppress certain films and promote others. Finding reliable copies to study is footnote, a major challenge for the historian whose questions center on analisys essay, the films. Historians also rely on print sources. These may be published sources, such as books, magazines, trade journals, and newspapers, or unpublished ones, like memoirs, letters, notes, production files, scripts, and chicago style court testimony.

Historians of archaeology dissertation blog, film technology scrutinize cameras, sound recorders, and other equipment. Chicago Thesis Footnote. A film studio or an important location might also serve as a source of essay father, evidence. Usually historians must verify their evidence. Often this depends on using the thesis footnote sort of descriptive research we have already mentioned, such as combing primary documents, checking filmographies and reference works, and the like. The problem of verification is particularly acute with film prints. Films have always circulated in differing versions. In the 1920s, Hollywood films were shot in two versions, one for the United States and one for export.

These could differ considerably in length, content, and energy research paper even visual style. Chicago Footnote. To this day, many Hollywood films are released in energy research Europe in chicago style more erotic or violent versions than are screened in analisys essay the United States. Footnote. In addition, many old films have deteriorated and been subject to cutting and revision. Even modern restorations do not always reproduce the analisys essay original release version. Often, then, the historian doesn’t know whether the print she is seeing represents anything like an chicago footnote, original, if indeed there can be said to be a single original version. Historians try to an older person essay, be aware of the differences among the versions of the films they are studying. The fact that there are different versions can itself be a source of chicago thesis, questions. Historians generally distinguish between primary and secondary sources. As applied to film, primary usually refers to analisys essay, sources the people directly involved in style thesis footnote whatever is archaeology dissertation blog, being studied.

For example, if you were studying Japanese cinema of the 1920s, the surviving films, interviews with filmmakers or audience members, and contemporary trade journals would count as primary material. Later discussions concerning the period, usually by another historian, would be considered secondary. Often, though, one scholar’s secondary source is another’s primary source, because the researchers are asking different questions. A critic’s 1966 essay about a 1925 film would be a secondary source if your question centered on footnote, the 1925 film. If, however, you were writing a history of film criticism during the 1960s, the grants research paper critic’s essay would be a primary source.

Explaining the Past: Basic Approaches. There are distinct types of explanation in film history. A standard list would include: Biographical history: focusing on an individual’s life history. Industrial or economic history: focusing on business practices. Aesthetic history: focusing on film art (form, style, genre) Technological history: focusing on the materials and thesis machines of film. Social/cultural/political history: focusing on dissertation pottery blog, the role of cinema in the larger society. This sort of inventory helps us understand that there is not one history of film but many possible histories, each adopting a different perspective.

Typically, the researcher begins with an interest in one of these areas, which helps him to formulate his initial question. Nevertheless, such a typology shouldn’t be taken too rigidly. Not all questions the historian may ask will fall neatly into only one of style, these pigeonholes. If you want to know why a film looks the way it does, the question may not be purely aesthetic; it might be linked to the biography of the filmmaker or to the technological resources available when the film was made. A study of film genres might involve both aesthetic and analisys essay cultural factors. Chicago Thesis Footnote. A person’s life cannot easily be separated from his or her working conditions within a film industry or from the contemporary political context. We propose that the interview with an older person student of style thesis footnote, film history think chiefly in terms of questions, keeping in analisys essay mind that some interesting questions are likely to cut across categorical boundaries. Explaining the Past: Organizing the Evidence.

Finding an answer to chicago style thesis footnote, a historical question may involve both description and explanation, in different mixtures. The techniques of descriptive research are specialized and require a wide range of background knowledge. Archaeology Blog. For example, some experts on early silent cinema can determine when a film copy was made by examining the stock on which it is style footnote, printed. Analisys Essay. The number and shape of the chicago style sprocket holes, along with the manner in essay father which a manufacturer’s name is printed along the edge of the film strip, can help date the print. Knowing the age of the stock can in turn help narrow down the style film’s date of production and country of government for alternative energy research, origin.

Historical explanation also involves concepts that organize the evidence produced by specialized knowledge. Style Thesis. Here are some of legal exam, them. Chronology Chronology is footnote, essential to historical explanation, and descriptive research is an indispensable aid to establishing the sequence of analisys essay, events. The historian needs to know that this film was made before that one or that event B took place after event A. But history is not mere chronology. A chronology stops short of chicago thesis footnote, explanation, just as a record of high and low tides gives no hint as to why tides change. History, as we have already seen, centrally involves explanation. Causality Much historical explanation involves cause and effect. Historians work with conceptions of various kinds of causes. Individual Causes People have beliefs and desires that affect how they act.

In acting, they make things happen. It is archaeology pottery, often reasonable to explain a historical change or a past state of affairs in light of the attitudes or behavior of individuals. This is not to thesis, say that individuals make everything happen or that things always happen as people originally intended or that people always understand just why they did what they did. It is simply to say that historians may justifiably appeal to what people think and feel and do as part of an explanation. Some historians believe that all historical explanation must appeal to person-based causes sooner or later. Government For Alternative Energy Research Paper. This position is usually called methodological individualism. A different, and even more sweeping, assumption is that only individuals, and exceptional individuals at that, have the power to create historical change. This view is sometimes labeled the Great Man theory of history, even though it is applied to women as well. Earlier generations of film historians, for example, were inclined to chicago thesis, treat D.W. Griffith as the most important figure in interview with essay the U.S. silent cinema because it seemed that he invented a number of editing techniques that became widespread. More recent historians have developed a counterargument, thanks to the greater availability of films by other directors and chicago style a more comparison-based method.

These scholars claim that Griffith developed certain tendencies that were already present, pushing them to government grants research, a new level of expression. Moreover, his most original techniques were not picked up by chicago style, others, so in some respects other directors had more influence on standard editing practice. As an interview, individual Griffith remains important, but he is probably not the Great Innovator that people once considered him. Group Causes People often act in groups, and at times we speak of the group as having a kind of existence over and above the individuals who compose it. Groups have rules and roles, structures and routines, and often these factors make things happen. We speak of a government’s declaring war, yet this act may not be reducible to more detailed statements about what all the individuals involved believed and chicago thesis footnote did. When we say that Warner Bros. decided to adopt sound, we are making a meaningful claim, even if we have no information about the beliefs and desires of the essay individual decision makers at the company; we may not even fully know who they were. Some historians assert that any historical explanation must, sooner or later, ground itself in group-based causes.

This position is usually called holism, or methodological collectivism, as opposed to methodological individualism. Several sorts of groups are important to the history of cinema. Throughout our book we talk about institutions government agencies, film studios, distribution firms, and other fairly formal, organized groups. We also talk about more informal affiliations of filmmakers. These are usually called movements or schools, small assemblies of style thesis, filmmakers and critics who share the same interests, beliefs about cinema, conceptions of film form and blog style, and the like. The Soviet filmmakers of the 1920sLev Kuleshov, Sergei Eisenstein, V.I.

Pudovkin, and many othersare a classic instance of a movement. Despite their individual differences, these men held in common a commitment to editing, often disjunctive editing, as central to a movie’s effects on a viewer. Less well-defined cases of a movement would be German Expressionist film of the 1920s, Italian neorealism after World War II, and French New Wave filmmaking during the style footnote 1960s. In these instances, the filmmakers often insisted that they shared no consciousness of belonging to a movement. Still, historians often find common trends in the films, in interview an older person the production circumstances, and in the local film culture, and these factors justify treating the filmmakers as a group, even if not a full-fledged movement. Influence Most historians use some notion of chicago footnote, influence to explain change. Influence describes the inspiration that an individual, a group, or a film can provide for others. Members of a movement can deliberately influence a director to essay exam, make a film a certain way, but a chance viewing of a movie can also influence a director. Influence does not mean simple copying.

You may have been influenced by a parent or a teacher, but you have not necessarily mimicked his or her behavior. In the arts, influence is often a matter of one artist’s getting ideas from other artists’ work but then pursuing those ideas in a personal way. The result may be quite different from the initial work that stimulated it. The contemporary director Jean-Luc Godard was influenced by chicago thesis footnote, Jean Renoir, although their films are markedly different. Sometimes we can detect the influence by examining the films; sometimes we rely on the testimony of the filmmaker. A body of night father son relationships, work by a group of chicago thesis footnote, directors may also influence later films. Soviet cinema of the legal essay exam 1920s influenced the documentary director John Grierson. The Hollywood cinema, as a set of films, has been enormously influential throughout film history, although all the style directors influenced by it certainly did not see exactly the same films. Influences are particular kinds of causes, so it is not surprising that influences may involve both individual activity and group activity. Trends and Generalizations Any historical question opens up a body of data for investigation. Andrew Jackson Term Papers. Once the historian starts to look closely at the datato go through a studio’s records, examine the films, page through the trade pressshe discovers that there is much more to thesis, explore than the initial question touches on.

It’s like looking into a microscope and night essay father son relationships discovering that a drop of water teems with organisms of confounding variety, all going about style thesis footnote, very different business. Every historian omits certain material. For one thing, the historical record is already incomplete. Many events go unrecorded, and many documents are lost forever. Analisys Essay. Further, historians inevitably select. They unweave the tangles of history and create a more coherent pattern. A historian simplifies and streamlines according to the question he is pursuing. One principal way historians go about thesis footnote, such simplification is by postulating trends.

Lots of things are going on, they admit, but “by and large” or “on the whole” or “for the most part,” we can identify a general tendency. Most Hollywood films of the 1940s were made in black and white, but most Hollywood films today are in color. On the interview with person essay whole, there has been a change, and we can see a trend toward the increasing use of color film stock between the 1940s and the 1960s. Chicago Style Thesis Footnote. Our task is to explain how and research paper why this trend occurred. By positing trends, historians generalize. They necessarily set aside interesting exceptions and chicago aberrations. But this is no sin, because the answer to essay, a question is necessarily pitched at a certain level of generality. All historical explanations pull back from the style throbbing messiness of reality. By recognizing that tendencies are “for-the-most-part” generalizations, the scholar can acknowledge that there is more going on than she is trying to explain. Periods Historical chronology and causation are without beginning or end. The child who incessantly asks what came before that or what made that happen soon discovers that we can trace out interview, a sequence of events indefinitely.

Historians necessarily limit the stretch of chicago style thesis footnote, time they will explore, and they go on to divide that stretch into meaningful phases or segments. For example, the historian studying American silent cinema already assumes that this period within film history ran from about 1894 to around 1929. The historian will probably further segment this stretch of time. She might break it down by decade, treating the 1900s, the 1910s, and government grants for alternative paper the 1920s. Instead, she might divide it with respect to changes external to filmsay, preWorld War I, World War I, and postWorld War I. Style Thesis. Another possibility is creating periods that mark phases in the development of storytelling style, such as 18941907, 19081917, and 19181929. Every historian marks out periods according to the research program he adopts and the question he asks. Interview With An Older Essay. Historians recognize that periodization can’t be rigid: trends do not follow in neat order. It is illuminating to think of the American “structural” film of the style thesis footnote early 1970s as a response to the “lyrical” film of the 1960s, but lyrical films were still being made well in the 1970s and afterward.

Histories of genres often mark off periods by innovative films, but this is not to deny that more ordinary movies display a great deal of continuity across periods. Rosemary’s Baby (1968) brought Satanic horror into the A-picture realm, but in analisys essay the years that followed, most horror films continued to be low-budget product. Similarly, we ought not to expect that the history of footnote, technology or styles or genres will march in legal essay writing step with political or social history. The period after World War II was indeed distinctive, because this global conflict had major effects on film industries and filmmakers in most countries; but not all political events demarcate distinct periods in relation to changes in film form or the film market. The assassination of President Kennedy was a wrenching event, but it had little effect on chicago, activities in the film world. Here, as ever, the historian’s research program and andrew jackson term central question will shape her sense of the relevant periods and parallel events. Footnote. This is, again, one reason that scholars often speak of film histories rather than a single film history. Significance In mounting explanations, historians of interview with essay, all arts make assumptions about the chicago thesis significance of the legal primer artworks they discuss.

We might treat a work as a “monument,” studying it because it is a highly valued accomplishment. Alternatively, we might study a work as a “document” because it records some noteworthy historical activity, such as the state of a society at a given moment or a trend within the art form itself. Most historians assume that the films they discuss have significance on any or all of the following three criteria: Intrinsic excellence: Some films are, simply, outstanding by artistic criteria. They are rich, moving, complex, thought-provoking, intricate, meaningful, or the like. Chicago Style Thesis. At least partly because of their quality, such films have played a key role in the history of cinema. Influence: A film may be historically significant by virtue of its influence on essay primer, other films. It may create or change a genre, inspire filmmakers to style thesis, try something new, or gain such a wide popularity that it spawns imitations and tributes. Term Papers. Since influence is an chicago, important part of historical explanations, this sort of film plays a prominent role in most histories. Typicality: Some films are significant because they vividly represent instances or trends.

They stand in for many other films of the analisys essay same type. The three criteria don’t have to combine. Thesis Footnote. An influential film doesn’t have to be excellent or typical, and an excellent film may never exert much influence. The films of Robert Bresson are usually considered exceptionally good, but for a long time they influenced no other filmmaking. Government Grants For Alternative Energy Paper. But of course in some cases the style thesis criteria can combine. A highly accomplished genre film, such as Singin’ in analisys essay the Rain or Rio Bravo , is often considered both excellent and highly typical. Chicago Style Footnote. Many acclaimed masterworks, such as The Birth of a Nation or Citizen Kane, were also very influential, and some also typify broader tendencies.

The preface to Film History: An Introduction , third edition, outlines the papers questions we focus on, but it’s probably worth mentioning them here as well. Although the book surveys the history of world cinema, we could hardly start with the question What is the history of chicago style thesis footnote, world cinema? That would give us no help in setting about our research and organizing the material we find. Government For Alternative Research Paper. Instead, we have highlighted three major questions. 1. How have uses of the style thesis film medium changed or become normalized over father time? Within “uses of the thesis footnote medium” we include matters of film form: the essay primer part/whole organization of the film. Often this involves telling a story, but a film’s overall form might also be based on an argument or an chicago style, abstract pattern.

The term “uses of the medium” also includes matters of analisys essay, film style, the patterned uses of film techniques ( mise-en-scène, or staging, lighting, setting, and costume; camerawork; editing; and footnote sound). In addition, any balanced conception of how the medium has been used must also consider film modes (documentary, avant-garde, fiction, animation) and government grants energy paper genres (for example, the Western, the chicago footnote thriller, or the musical). Interview Person Essay. So we also examine these phenomena. All such matters are central to most college and university survey courses in footnote film history. A central purpose of our book is to survey the uses of the dissertation blog medium in thesis footnote different times and places. Sometimes we dwell on the creation of night father, stable norms of form and style, as when we examine how Hollywood standardized certain editing options in the first two decades of filmmaking.

At other times, we examine how filmmakers have proposed innovative ways of structuring form or using film technique. 2. How have the conditions of the film industryproduction, distribution, and exhibitionaffected the uses of the medium? Films are made within modes of thesis footnote, production, habitual ways of organizing the labor and materials involved in creating a movie. Some modes of analisys essay, production are industrial; that’s when companies make films as a business. The classic instance of industrial production is the studio system, in which firms are organized in order to make films for large audiences through a fairly detailed division of labor. Hollywood’s studio system is the most famous, but there have been studio systems of production in many countries. Another sort of industrial production might be called the artisanal, or one-off, approach, in chicago style which a production company makes one film at a time (perhaps only one film, period). Still other modes of production are less highly organized, involving small groups or individuals who make films for specific purposes.

In all these instances, the ways in which films are made have had particular effects on paper, the look and sound of the finished products. An avant-garde films, made on a low budget by an individual filmmaker, is more likely to be a personal expression than a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster. The ways in which films are exhibited have also affected film history. For example, the major technological innovations associated with the early 1950s wide-screen picture, stereophonic sound, increased use of color were actually available decades earlier. Each could have been developed before the 1950s, but the U.S. film industry had no pressing need to do so since film attendance was so high that spending money on chicago thesis footnote, new attractions would not have significantly increased profits. Only when attendance dropped precipitously in the late 1940s were producers and exhibitors pushed to introduce new technologies to lure audiences back into theaters. 3. How have international trends emerged in the uses of the film medium and in the film market?

In Film History we try to balance the consideration of important national contributions with a sense of how international and cross-cultural influences were operating. Many nations’ audiences and film industries have been influenced by directors and films that have migrated across their borders. Genres are vagabond as well. The Hollywood Western influenced the Japanese samurai film and the Italian Western, genres that in turn influenced the Hong Kong kung-fu films of the 1970s. Interestingly, Hollywood films then began incorporating elements of the martial arts movie. Just as important, the film industry itself is significantly transnational. At certain periods, circumstances closed off countries from the flow of films, but most often there has been a global film market, and we understand it best by tracing trends across cultures and regions. We have paid particular attention to conditions that allowed people to see films made outside their own country. Each of exam writing, these how questions accompanies a great many why questions. For any part of the chicago style thesis footnote processes we focus on, we can ask what conditions caused them to research paper, operate as they did. Why, for instance, did Soviet filmmakers undertake their experiments in disturbing, aggressive narrative?

Why did Hollywood’s studio system begin to fragment in chicago thesis footnote the late 1940s? Why did “new waves” and essay exam writing primer “young cinemas” arise in Europe, the Soviet Union, and Japan around 1960? Why are more films produced now with international investment than in chicago style footnote the 1930s or 1940s? Historians are keen to know what factors made a change occur, and essay exam primer our general questions include a host of subquestions about causes and effects. Recall our five general explanatory approaches: biographical, industrial, aesthetic, technological, and social. If we had to squeeze our book into one or more of these pigeonholes, we could say that its approach is predominantly aesthetic and industrial. It examines how types of films, film styles, and film forms have changed in relation to the conditions of film production, distribution, and exhibition within certain countries and within the international flow of films. But this summary of chicago style, our approach is too confining, as even a cursory look at analisys essay what follows will indicate. Sometimes we invoke an individual a powerful producer, an innovative filmmaker, an style thesis footnote, imaginative critic. Sometimes we consider technology.

And we often frame our account with discussions of the political, social, and cultural context of a period. Take, for andrew term, example, our central question: How have uses of the film medium changed or become normalized over time? This is a question about aesthetic matters, but it also impinges on factors of technology. For instance, conceptions of “realistic” filmmaking changed with the introduction of portable cameras and sound equipment in the late 1950s. Similarly, our second question How have the conditions of the film industry affected the style footnote uses of the medium? is at once economic, technological, and aesthetic. Finally, asking how international trends have emerged in the uses of the film medium and in the film market concerns both economic and social/cultural/political factors. In the early era of cinema, films circulated freely among countries, and interview person essay viewers often did not know the nationality of a film they were seeing. In the chicago style 1910s, however, war and nationalism blocked certain films from circulating. At the same time, the with person growth of particular film industries, notably Hollywood, depended on access to other markets, so the degree to which films could circulate boosted some nations’ output and hindered that of others.

In addition, the circulation of thesis footnote, U.S. Interview An Older Essay. films abroad served to spread American cultural values, which in turn created both admiration and hostility. In sum, we have been guided, as we think most historians are, by research questions rather than rigid conceptions of the type of history we are writing. And what we take to be the most plausible answer to a given question will depend on the strength of the thesis footnote evidence and the argument we can make for it not on a prior commitment to father, writing only a certain kind of history. Our answers to historical questions are, however, not simply given in a list or summary. Like most historical arguments, ours takes a narrative form. Historians use language to communicate their arguments and evidence to others.

Descriptive research programs can do this through a summary of findings: this film is Diana l’affascinatrice, made in Italy by Caesar-Film in 1915, directed by Gustavo Serena, and style thesis footnote so on. But historical explanations require a more complicated crafting. Sometimes historians frame their explanations as persuasive arguments. To take an analisys essay, example already cited, a historian investigating the development of sound by Warner Bros. might start by considering the various explanations already offered and chicago style thesis footnote taken for granted. Then he might set forth the analisys essay reasons for believing his alternative interpretation. This is a familiar form of rhetorical argument, eliminating unsatisfactory beliefs before settling on a more plausible one. More often, historians’ explanations take the form of stories. Chicago Style Footnote. Narrative history, as it is called, seeks to analisys essay, answer how and why questions by tracing the relevant circumstances and conditions over style time. It produces a chain of causes and with person essay effects, or it shows how a process works, by telling a story.

For instance, if we are trying to answer the style question How did the Hays Office negotiate with firms to arrive at night father an agreement about an acceptable film? we can frame a step-by-step narrative of the censorship process. Or, if we are seeking to explain what led the Hays Office to be created, we might lay out the causal factors as a story. As these examples indicate, the story’s “characters” might be individuals or groups, institutions or even films; the style thesis “plot” consists of the situations in which the players operate and the changes they initiate and undergo. Narrative is one of the basic ways in which humans make sense of the world, and so it’s not surprising that historians use stories to make the past intelligible. Andrew Papers. Film History: An Introduction follows tradition in creating a large-scale narrative, one that includes several stories within it. We divide film history into six large periods early cinema (to about 1919), the chicago late silent era (19191929), the development of sound cinema (19261945), the period after World War II (19461960s), the period running from the 1960s to the 1980s, and the contemporary era (1980s-the present). These divisions reflect developments in (1) film form and style; (2) major changes in film production, distribution, and exhibition; and (3) significant international trends. Analisys Essay. The periodization can’t be exactly synchronized for all three areas, but it does indicate approximate boundaries for the changes we try to trace. An alternative organizational pattern is that of the topical history . Topical history treats an idea or theme rather than a story.

If you were writing a book-length history of Manhattan, for instance, you might devote one chapter to geography, another to political dynamics, another to social changes, another to the events of 9/11, and so on. Style. The chapters themselves might be organized as narratives (though maybe not), but the overall structure would give a portrait of a city’s history from several angles. The historian must decide, at various levels, between narrative organization and legal writing primer topical organization. Suppose your question was How did America ’s postwar occupation of chicago thesis, Germany affect the local film industry and culture? Once you’ve done your research and come to some conclusions, you could organize your presentation narratively or topically.

That is, your chapters could proceed in chronological order to trace the changes in the industry between 1945 and the early 1950s. Or each chapter could deal with events occurring across the andrew entire period, but in style thesis different spheres production, censorship, journalism, exhibition, and the like. In another topical layout, you could organize the book around key films or film policies that had an impact on different spheres of German life. 5. To suggest the flavor of doing historical research, we offer one of our own experiences. Here Kristin explains the process of researching a book-length study of Ernst Lubitsch’s films. Of the directors widely considered to be among the government grants for alternative research greatest, Ernst Lubitsch has had relatively little of substance written about him. The other directors of Germany’s “golden age” of the silent cinema, F. W. Chicago Thesis. Murnau and especially Fritz Lang, have received more attention.

Perhaps this has been the case because Lubitsch has no one thematic concern underlying his work. Murnau and Lang also are linked to the German Expressionist movement, while Lubitsch worked outside it. His habit of moving between vast historical epics and broad comedies for his German films makes him hard to interview with an older essay, pin down. Style. But why is he important? Filmmakers and cinema buffs love Lubitsch, partly for the sheer quality of his work, from the hilarious silent comedies of the late 1910s, like I Don’t Want to Be a Man and The Doll to the masterpieces of the sound period, most notably Trouble in Paradise (1932) and The Shop around the analisys essay Corner (1940). Apart from chicago thesis his being a great director, though, why is Lubitsch significant? There are many things a historian could say about Lubitsch. I had been struck by grants paper, how, after World War I, Germans acknowledged Lubitsch as their greatest director. After he moved to Hollywood, he quickly came to chicago thesis, be considered the greatest director there as well.

Yet Lubitsch’s style in his German films differed considerably from that we find in his American output. What are these differences, and how could he achieve such stature in both countries? A study of analisys essay, Lubitsch could also highlight how American and chicago style thesis German national films styles differed during these crucial years in the development of the cinema as an art. According to traditional historical accounts, during the 1920s, imaginative German techniques like Expressionist set design and interview person essay the freely moving camera quickly influenced Hollywood films. Historians had not considered the influence might move in the opposite direction, from Hollywood to Germany.

A study of how Lubitsch adapted so quickly to the American way of filmmaking could test that standard account. How long a period should the chicago footnote book cover? Lubitsch had begun as a silent-film comedian, directing some of night father son relationships, his own shorts and short features during the style thesis war. He moved into jackson term papers features in 1918. I decided to limit my focus to the ten-year period from 1918 to 1927, the year of Lubitsch’s last surviving silent film. During this period Lubitsch made a remarkable 28 features and one short. Of these titles, seven are not known to survive. In addition, three of the surviving films are lacking significant amounts of footage. The 21 available films became the core body of evidence for my study.

Before World War I, the international cinema was dominated by French and Italian cinema. American cinema was expanding domestically, but it had yet to make major inroads in most overseas markets. During the war, however, production declined in chicago style thesis footnote France and Italy, and legal exam writing the American firms quickly stepped in to style thesis footnote, supply theaters in many territories. Once hostilities ended, Hollywood films were firmly entrenched, and other producing countries found themselves struggling to keep a substantial share of their domestic markets, let alone to compete with America internationally. The war had, ironically, strengthened the night essay son relationships German industry. In 1916, the government banned the style thesis footnote import of all but Danish films.

This ban was kept in place until December 31, 1920. Thus for nearly five years, German film production was free to expand, and the industry emerged from the war second in size and strength only to Hollywood. It was during that period of isolation that Lubitsch came into his own as a director. Institutional circumstances played a role in making him the finest proponent of the German approach to filmmaking (a style which was largely the same as that used in most European producing countries). During the mid-1910s, however, Hollywood film style was changing enormously. Term Papers. What has been termed the “classical” style emerged, the style thesis footnote underlying principle of which was to tailor film technique to tell a story as comprehensibly and unobtrusively as possible.

Scenes were broken up into closer shots through analytical editing, shifting the spectator’s eye to analisys essay, the most salient part of the action at each moment. Chicago Style Thesis Footnote. Filming in jackson term papers diffused light in the open air or in glass-sided studios was abandoned in favor of “dark” studios illuminated entirely by artificial lighting. This multi-directional lighting was designed to pick characters out against muted backgrounds and to model their bodies more three-dimensionally. Chicago Thesis. The technique became codified as three-point lighting. Grants Energy. 6 Acting styles became less broad, depending more on glances and small gestures than on pantomime. Set design evolved to make the space containing the chicago style thesis footnote action simpler and hence less distracting. In sum, a new trend had begun, led by American filmmaking. Once Hollywood films began screening in Germany in 1921, a new set of with an older essay, causes came into chicago style play.

German filmmakers started absorbing the American style, and with essay Lubitsch was in the forefront of this change. His German films of 1921 and 1922 reflect his new knowledge of classical technique, and he was clearly ready to make the leap into Hollywood filmmaking even before he went there. Once in America, he rapidly honed his application of chicago, classical principles, and andrew jackson soon he was in turn influencing the filmmakers there with a string of masterpieces, including The Marriage Circle (1924) and Lady Windermere’s Fan (1925). For example, we can see the change in Lubitsch’s approach to lighting in three frames. The first, from Carmen (1918), shows lighting coming entirely from the front; there’s no backlighting to pick out the gray uniform against the gray background. By 1921, after Lubitsch had seen Hollywood films, he used light from the front, side, and rear in Das Weib des Pharao . In Hollywood, Lubitsch routinely used back lighting to chicago style thesis, make his actors stand out against andrew jackson term, the sets, as in thesis this frame from Three Women (1923). In setting out on legal primer, my project, I asked a small number of questions. How did Lubitsch’s German features reflect a more general national filmmaking style at the end of the war?

How did Lubitsch’s style change over this decade and to what extent was the change a reaction to Hollywood films? What impact did the new classical Hollywood style have more generally on German filmmaking in chicago style thesis the 1920s? I was already familiar with American films of this period, having collaborated on The Classical Hollywood Cinema (1985, Columbia University Press) with David and jackson papers with Janet Staiger. I had examined many films and gathered illustrations that I could use for the new book. To learn about the very different German style of the same era, I went to film archives in the U.S. and abroad to study Lubitsch’s films in style thesis footnote detail, watching them on an editing table and making frame reproductions for use as illustrations. I examined Lubitsch’s context by watching about night essay, 75 films by other directors, also collecting images for illustrations. (I did not include Expressionist and Neue Sachlichkeit films, as these were avant-garde alternatives to classical Hollywood style.) I wasn’t looking at acknowledged masterpieces, for I wanted to chicago thesis footnote, track typical trends in German film style.

In libraries I went through film-industry publications, primarily the interview with an older essay Lichtbildbühne and style Film-Kurier , and the two main technical journals of the 1920s, Die Kinotechnik and Die Filmtechnik . Cinematography manuals and legal exam primer the memoirs of people who had worked with Lubitsch filled in details of the director’s working methods. Style Thesis Footnote. Legal papers in the United Artists collection of the Wisconsin Center for dissertation pottery blog, Film and Theater Research shed light on style footnote, Mary Pickford’s dealings with Lubitsch during and after their work on Rosita (1923) dealings about which some widely believed myths had persisted. Reviews of Lubitsch’s films in essay father son relationships the German and American press revealed how Lubitsch’s films were viewed and what expert viewers noticed about thesis, their look. All this evidence allowed me to answer my initial questions. I could identify the point in Lubitsch’s career when his films began to reflect the influence of Hollywood style. I was able to analisys essay, do the same with more ordinary German films of the style thesis footnote post-war era. I showed that, contrary to the standard view of this era, Hollywood films had considerably more impact on German films than the other way round. In writing the archaeology blog book, I didn’t organize the chapters to give a chronological account of style footnote, Lubitsch’s career during this ten-year period. Instead, because this was to be a stylistic analysis, I broke it down topically. An introductory chapter laid out Lubitsch’s German career briefly and discussed the industrial and social conditions in Germany that discouraged or fostered the movement of influences. The next four chapters centered on four areas of film technique: lighting, set design, editing, and acting.

These sharply revealed the differences between Hollywood and German style in the crucial years. For each technique, I discussed Hollywood norms and contrasted these with German norms. I laid out numerous examples from ordinary German films and from Lubitsch’s. Each chapter ended with a section on Lubitsch’s Hollywood films and how closely each adhered to classical filmmaking norms. The final chapter dealt with the influences of Hollywood film on mainstream commercial German cinema of the era after Lubitsch had left his native country. These influences, I tried to show, were far more widespread and significant than any German techniques that might be detected in legal essay writing primer Hollywood films of the style thesis footnote same years. Within chapters the discussion was organized narratively, tracing Lubitsch’s work chronologically for each area of film technique. The overall argument moved from specific to general. While the pottery blog opening chapter dealt largely with Lubitsch’s career and work, the last one left Lubitsch and concentrated almost entirely on chicago style thesis footnote, German cinema of the 1920s.

When Herr Lubitsch Goes to Hollywood was published, few of Lubitsch’s silent features were widely known. Legal Essay Exam. Since then, DVD releases have made it possible for a broad audience to see some of the classic films he made in each country. The Eyes of the Mummy (1918) is available. The “Lubitsch in Berlin” set contains several German features: The Doll, The Oyster Princess, I Don’t Want to Be a Man, Sumurun, Anna Boleyn, and The Wildcat plus a documentary on Lubitsch’s early career. (Each is available separately as well.) Lubitsch’s two most important Hollywood films are also on DVD: His romantic comedy The Marriage Circle (1924) is available, and a restored print of what is arguably his masterpiece of the silent period, Lady Windermere’s Fan (1925), is part of the “More Treasures from American Film Archives” set. Perhaps now readers can evaluate my answers to the questions my book seeks to answer, and chicago style thesis footnote I hope that other historians will ask new ones of their own. We hope we’ve shown that film historians, professional or amateur, work with both ideas and information.

They mount projects within research programs. They don’t simply state facts; they try to andrew, ask questions. They don’t just pile up data; they make arguments. The facts and questions, data and arguments combine to make doing film history a fascinating pursuit. Historical writing about films will probably never be as common as film criticism; most people prefer to chicago thesis footnote, comment about films by analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating them. Writing an essay on film history takes a lot more time and with an older essay effort than writing a review of footnote, a current film. Nonetheless, historical study offers unique pleasures. If you want to understand the father son relationships context of a film that you admire, you would enjoy reading film history. Thesis Footnote. Just as important, a deeper understanding of film history introduces you to a range of new films to enjoy. Finally, if we have any curiosity about the films that captivate us now, we can start to satisfy it by papers, thinking historically.

What happens today springs from what happened yesterday. By trying to understand film history, we better understand the movies of our moment.
